Calhoun Street Soups, Salads and Spirits
1915 South Calhoun St (one block south and across the street from the Oyster
Bar)
Opens at 11a.m. Monday thru Saturday
Environment
Calhoun Street is a newly opened pub and eatery located just a bit south of
downtown Fort Wayne. Upon entering Calhoun Street it’s hard not to be
in awe of the amazing job the owners did creating the atmosphere of the restaurant.
The restaurant has very high ceilings with the original pressed tin ceilings
still in place, original beat up but nicely refinished wooden floors,
along with eight or so 42” LCD TVs for entertainment oe sports. The restaurant
and bar areas are separated by a row of wonderfully crafted wooden booths
and a high partition wall that still allows you to view both the bar and restaurant
giving the entire place an open feeling. The tables and booths are spaciously
separated from each other so that you do not feel like you are eating right
on top of the person next to you. .
Food
Calhoun Street offers a limited menu of soups, salads, and sandwiches, but
don’t let that discourage you from checking them out. What they do offer
they do well and they offer good portions for a decent price. They offer everything
from salads, wraps, subs, classic club sandwiches, buffalo wings, and other
appetizers.
On our most recent trip to Calhoun Street we decided to give their Super Subs
a try. They have three to choose from, an Italian, American, or a Roast Beef.
All are served hot on fresh baked bread. We decided to try the American Sub,
which has – ham,
turkey, bacon, onion, green pepper, cheddar cheese, mustard , lettuce & tomato.
The subs also come with one of their side dishes (Mac & Cheese, potato
salad, pasta salad, cottage cheese, coleslaw, or chips) for $5.99. Let me tell
you this is not a small sandwich. It is comparable in size to that “eat
fresh” restaurant's
foot long sub, only I think that it is better. We also tried their sweet
potato chips that are sliced and deep fried sweet potatoes that came
with a tangy mayo sauce to dip them in. I have not seen them on a restaurant
menu before, and thought why not try something different, and found them to
be rather delicious.
For those of you who looking for a nice atmosphere for just chatting with someone
over a cup of coffee and a piece of pie, they also offer a desert try that
is reasonably priced and also coffee and hot tea. For those of you looking
to get a bit of work or studying done, or if you just can not pull yourself
away from your laptop, they also offer Wi-Fi for their diners.
